Bay Area Civil Air Patrol Begins Advanced Cyber Security Camp

July 20, 2020

Livermore, CA. – The San Francisco Bay Area Group 2 started its first day of the Air Force Association’s CyberPatriot Advanced CyberCamp today for 60 middle school and high school students. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Group 2 Advanced CyberCamp was offered virtually.

The CyberPatriot Advanced CyberCamp curriculum covers in-depth computer security topics such as management of a virtual computer network and management of Windows and Linux computer services. The skills learned by Advanced CyberCamp prepares participants for the annual Air Force Association CyberPatriot Competition as well as teaching skills that can be used more generally to stay safe online.

Lt Col Noel Luneau, Civil Air Patrol’s San Francisco Bay Group 2 Commander said that this CyberPatriot Advanced CyberCamp will be important for our cadets in learning the skills necessary to advance in the CyberPatriot competitions.

“By taking advantage of this unique opportunity, our cadets will be well positioned to continue a high level of excellence in CyberPatriot,” he said. “My thanks to Captain Joe  Spears for taking the initiative to run this Camp and to the adult instructors that supported it.”

The Group 2 Advanced CyberCamp is being offered for free of charge to Civil Air Patrol cadets. It also provided three possible sessions due to the large number of participants and the need to be flexible to accommodate the schedules of both its participants and instructors. These sessions included a morning session from 8:30AM to 12:30PM, an afternoon session from 1:00PM to 5:00PM, and an evening session from 5:30PM to 9:30PM.

Because of the flexible scheduling, the Group 2 Advanced CyberCamp had participants from every unit in the San Francisco Bay Area. Furthermore, cadets from 16 squadrons across California and 9 squadrons from 8 other states are enrolled in the camp. This event is supported by 20 adult instructors.
